ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY - Haunt

November 1rst here is when we celebrate la toussaint (all saints), the ancient Celtic celebration of those who left, and that day in the year when the living and the dead meet for a brief moment. It is not really a moment of candy and feast, more of a moment of contemplation and quietness while we remember and honour our relatives, and gather in cemeteries to flower their tombs.

  1. Your illustration looks like a watercolor painting...wondering if you have any tips you could share to achieve that feel? I love your style!

  2. Thank you Chelle. I don't have any particular technique, I work in Photoshop with an Intuos tablet. I begin with a dark stroke with a simple brush in a layer set to "multiply" that comes above the other layers, hardness of the brush is set to 100%, but opacity and flow vary from 60 to 90 % then I work the colours in multiple strokes just like real life watercolor and vary the opacity using the pressure of the Wacom - Pressure control must be enabled for opacity and brush size in the upper panel menu - in several layers to be able to use the eraser to make adjustments. Then I use layers in "lienar burn" or "color burn" to mark the darker areas with the brush or a gradient on which, again, I erase some areas, or vary their intensity with the ctrl-U command. You can find time laps videos of some images in the older posts, they'll give you an idea of the process. Then it's just experimenting and keep on trying, have fun :)

  3. And also ... I paste the scan of a textured paper as a background, to add a warm paper texture . Or above the illustration with different layer parameters. Have fun :)
