I realise that this is only my first post for 2012.
I'm pretty much in the starting blocks myself. My two comic books are printed and about to be available. They will be presented to the public and press on February 1rst in Paris, followed by different book signing in Paris and Evreux (to begin with, more signing trips to come this summer). I am very excited and impatient.

I am also very impatient to take possession of the brand new British motorcycle I just offered myself as a reward for going through all the work, pain and efforts of those last two years.

2012 starts in the best possible manner. I hope it does for you too.

Sorry I skipped a couple of topics, but I took things a little slower the last weeks and managed to save a little more time to deal with non artistic personal matters that I had to deal with. Moving furnitures and selling apartments . It is winter now and we hang a cascade of blue lights at the window to lighten the mood of the square a little.

In Dutch painting, a vanity is a still life painting depicting life on earth as vain. Vain -> Vanity / Vanitas.
In french, to describe a still life, we use the words "Nature morte". or "dead nature".

In the arts, vanitas is a type of symbolic work of art especially associated with Northern European still life painting in Flanders and the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th centuries, though also common in other places and periods. The word is Latin, meaning "emptiness" and loosely translated corresponds to the meaninglessness of earthly life and the transient nature of vanity. Ecclesiastes 1:2 from the Bible is often quoted in conjunction with this term. The Vulgate (Latin translation of the Bible) renders the verse as Vanitas vanitatum omnia vanitas. The verse is translated as Vanity of vanities; all is vanity by the King James Version of the Bible, and Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless by the New International Version of the Bible.

Vanitas themes were common in medieval funerary art, with most surviving examples in sculpture. By the 15th century these could be extremely morbid and explicit, reflecting an increased obsession with death and decay also seen in the Ars moriendi, Danse Macabre and the overlapping motif of the Memento mori. From the Renaissance such motifs gradually became more indirect, and as the still-life genre became popular, found a home there. Paintings executed in the vanitas style are meant as a reminder of the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death. They also provided a moral justification for many paintings of attractive objects.

Common vanitas symbols include skulls, which are a reminder of the certainty of death; rotten fruit, which symbolizes decay like ageing; bubbles, which symbolize the brevity of life and suddenness of death; smoke, watches, and hourglasses, which symbolize the brevity of life; and musical instruments, which symbolize brevity and the ephemeral nature of life. Fruit, flowers and butterflies can be interpreted in the same way, and a peeled lemon, as well as accompanying seafood was, like life, attractive to look at, but bitter to taste. There is debate among art historians as to how much, and how seriously, the vanitas theme is implied in still lifes without explicit imagery such as a skull. As in much moralistic genre painting, the enjoyment evoked by the sensuous depiction of the subject is in a certain conflict with the moralistic message.

Any experience or advice you can give me to teach me and make me a happy bunny ?

Also, I very well could see me travelling the new world next year so who knows ... why not having me participating in your very cool art project ? All a need is a couch somewhere and a few drinks in good society. I am open to suggestions .

it's been a year now since I decided to gamble on my career and start as a freelance artist.
I made a decent living through the first year thanks to 2 publishing contracts and a handfull of little jobs. I loved every single one of them even if some got away without paying the bill and some of my co-workers didn't really deliver as they were expected to... But I guess that is unavoidable when you want to live your life like the rest of the world isn't made of thieves only.
Working on my things from home, being able to do the job like I want to do it without being constantly dragged down by a management that just have no clue about what's going on, being able to take decisions and see that I took the good ones instead of being dragged into other people's mistakes. Working at 4 am and 15 hours straight when I feel like it, or not working for a whole day when I need to take care of my loved ones... or just go for a ride.
For all those reasons I love being a freelance artist so far. Lots of hard work and just enough money to get away with it but so many satisfactions.

yesterday I learned that I should be allowed another 3 publishing contracts on roughly the 2 next years. There's another two years of red velvet carpet in front of me.

I've been away for a month !
not really. just a lot of work to do, a couple of meetings, and a daily visit to the hospital that's taking 2 or 3 hours out of every each of my days since 5 weeks.

We have a long red and blue heat wave here. Nature is still in blossom and sparkling everywhere but it will be burnt soon. Breeders and farmers already complain that this summer will be a catastrophe, and it's not even summer yet.
It will probably be. Right now it's 30°C in my office, and I'm in the shadows.

The wacom seems to have switched to the hechy-sketchy mode, whitch isn't so suitable when you are trying to draw wheels...

So I turned down a comic series last week, we couldn't agree on a method that would give us enough creative freedom and we felt a little too old to be talked down like little naughty boys. Of course the last 6 month of work on that project go directly into the paper shredder.

Would work for motorcycle. what can I draw for you ?

Maybe the reason I draw so many nudies is only because I always struggle to draw folding fabrics around the elbows, knees and pelvis. It turns into obsession every time I have to work in someone else's graphic style. That day after monday we have a big meeting to decide if we keep on working for a project with someone else's style or if we decide to keep our dignity and put all our efforts into our own thing and say goodbye to reasonable money and assured media coverage but poor relations. Two more bad sleeping nights before that bad day. I trust my feelings for this kind of decisions and even if I cannot claim fame and fortune, I don't think my career turned so bad so far after all.

wheels are so much fun.
Here's my secret recipe.
Draw the transversal axle pointing to the vanishing point. Pop an ellipse centered on the axle. Rotate the ellipse 90° from the axle. Copy the ellipse keeping the same ratio, and distribute them along the axle. job done. As you can see on the motorcycle wheel, the perspective is actually wrong once you reach a wide angle effect, but it will work in most case.
Hell, the Egyptians built a millennium empire without the use of the wheel, you should be able to build a few sketches with a bended one.

Had a very positive meeting with my soon to be publisher in Paris on monday. Frustrating because I only went from train station to underground to cafe to office to underground to cafe to train station, but very promising on the work front.
I hope I'll be able to show some of the work before it comes out in 2012, here, or on the studio blog.

Haven't started the bikes in weeks, I hope the batteries will hold.

just one of those days when everything seems annoying and you get this feeling of being unable to achieve anything. maybe it's just a bad cold.

"the poor man's coffee" was an expression that came back regularly when someone in my family was asked what he wanted for dessert. Always made me laugh. still does and I never miss an occasion to use it myself.
I googled it and it seems like a common expression that goes back to the time of the early immigrants or WWII. At the end of the sunday meal, they couldn't afford dessert or coffee. All they could afford was some private good time with the mama.
My family was modest but I thing we always managed to afford coffee.

About desserts and cakes, it was my birthday yesterday. took the day off and rode the bike all day.

About one year ago my boss would let go the first hints that there would be some changes in the studio but he always said that I shouldn't be afraid because things would only grow bigger and better and I would be silly to worry. I worked hard another six month, doing most of my co-workers job in an attempt to make things better for the studio. Six month later he told me that there were some very good news about new deals and partners and he laid me off but it was all for the best and I would benefit from the change in the end. I worked my bum off during my holidays and the 3 month legal notice to finish as much work as I could then I insisted that we'd discuss the new arrangements about our future collaboration. This is when he had to confess that there wouldn't be a future for me in the studio, just a couple of dirty jobs paid less than ever, the equivalent of one month worth of salary. I still don't know if he lied all along or just got trapped in a bad arrangement himself and still don't care but I was devastated and refused the deal.

Another six month later, I am about to have the life I always dreamt I had, about to have publishing contracts with two of the biggest comic book publishing companies around, with people that do not treat me like dirt and seem to appreciate my work. Even if the money won't be as good for a couple of year and we have A LOT of work ahead of us, I can't really say I made the bad decisions and it feels pretty good I must say. call it karma, luck or logical following of a life of dedicated work.

As I read earlier today, life is a kid's dream made true as an adult.

On the work front, I still haven't signed any contracts, but it's almost like I can pick the projects I want to do, stop searching for new incomes and let down the ones I like the less. Sunrise looks really good this morning.

This is what I am currently working for a french magazine.
The Giant Robot From Outer Space is actually only the background of the first page illustration. I still need to overdub the 3 teenage superheroes. That will be Monday morning's work.
It is so different than anything I have ever done before it's so exciting. Again I have to mimic the style of the former artist, and by doing so I am learning so many things.
I love my job. being self employee kicks ass. this is the best summer EVER.
I just hope I can find a couple more exciting jobs, nice people to work with, and can finally begin to make some decent money soon.

I hate this wacom. The tablet is too high and too small, the pen doesn't have any sentivity, I have to push it untill my wrist hurts to get a line, and the end wobbles inside the pen and doesn't have any accurcy anymore. Maybe it's time I invest into something new.

I missed last week's topic on Illustration friday !!!
for the first time in 4 years.
Not that I didn't want to do it, I already had a subject, maybe was it too ambitious.
But most of all I didn't have any free time and energy left now that I took the decision to try and live as a freelance ilustrator, with the help of a few friends of course. Being laid off helped the process of course.

Back to the beginning now with sketchbook pro, thanks to the advice of Rolly.
I really can't get any decent line out of this wacom. maybe size DOES matter.

For anything serious about perspective, I'd advise Erwin Panofsky's work.
It is interesting to learn how and why we finally developed the perspective view in figurative art, and how it places the spectator in the centre in the universe, and not the artist, or god. How it chose to give prior to the empiric feeling of the world rather than some order or hierarchy. Perspective is the first step in considering the image as a speach you do to one and unique person. Perspective is how where you are affects the artistic experience you make. perspective is how your place in the universe influence geometry, but in the end, it's all just math or binary files. nothing real.
perspective is a lie you make. to make the story looks better than it really is.
All in all, it's all how good of a liar you are, and where is your point of view that matters. if anything does.

I gave up this silly idea that I don't need pen and paper.
now I need to find a way to merge the lines into the colors. better luck next time.
let's face it, I usually use brushed that cost more than $50, and I order uniball pens by dozens because they are the only one I want to use. It just won't work with a heavy thick plastic wacom pen. not as long as I can't afford something more sophisticated than a volito.

other than that, snow is finally starting to melt but the roads suffered from the month long freezing temperatures. no ride planned yet.
